With over 150 million native speakers across the Middle East and Central Asia, Persian (Farsi) serves as the primary language in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, with additional communities throughout the region. Historically, Persian was a lingua franca stretching from the Mediterranean to India, boasting a profound cultural heritage that includes masterpieces by Ferdousi, Khayyam, Saadi, Rumi, and Hafiz. Its literary influence extends to European authors like Victor Hugo, Voltaire, Lamartine, Maeterlinck, Goethe, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, as well as Arabic, Turkish, and Urdu literature, with numerous Persian loanwords still present in these languages.
