Exploring Ancient Greek is an enriching academic pursuit. The Ancient Greek major requires no previous familiarity with the language. It covers foundational linguistic elements (grammar, vocabulary, syntax) while cultivating reading abilities that allow direct engagement with original texts. Our curriculum provides exceptional access to Greece's literary, historical, and philosophical works in their authentic form. By connecting with antiquity through its language and writings, you'll develop deeper insights into both ancient civilizations and modern culture. Mastering Ancient Greek is particularly valuable for those focusing on Greek or Roman history and civilization.
Students with prior Ancient Greek knowledge should meet with the program coordinator to determine the suitable starting level.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the program, students will possess the ability to:
familiarize themselves with and expand their knowledge of Ancient Greek grammar and vocabulary, enhancing their capacity to read texts both independently (some at sight) and with reference materials;
progress from simplified texts to analyzing seminal works from Greek and Greco-Roman culture;
examine these writings within their historical and cultural contexts; and
apply critical methodologies to evaluate both ancient sources and contemporary discourse.
