The Earth and Marine Sciences specialization is designed for students with background knowledge in Earth Science, Marine Science, or related fields (such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Environmental Science, or Engineering), who wish to pursue an independent research project under faculty supervision. Typically spanning two full-time semesters, this program offers research methods training, optional instruction in analytical techniques, data science, computational geosciences, and advanced coursework, alongside a significant research component (24-36 units) that culminates in an Honours thesis. Together, these elements prepare graduates for professional opportunities in various industry and government sectors, while also providing a foundation for further academic research at the Masters or Ph.D. level.
Learning Outcomes
Develop and conduct an independent, sustained research project to advance knowledge within Earth and Marine Sciences.
Critically assess relevant theories and concepts in Earth and Marine Sciences, connecting them to appropriate methodologies and evidence to form sound conclusions.
Apply geological and scientific reasoning by analyzing, validating, and explaining concepts within the chosen research field.
