Tailored for graduates who have finished a coursework Masters or Honours Bachelor degree, our Master of Philosophy is entirely research-based and spans two years of full-time study. With mentorship from an accomplished research supervisor, you'll conceptualize, design, and execute your own independent research project on a subject you're deeply passionate about. The program offers the freedom to explore topics aligned with your personal interests and professional field.This research degree operates independently, free from classes or coursework obligations. You'll meet periodic progress checkpoints to ensure steady advancement toward completing your thesis or creative output. Your academic journey will culminate in producing a significant thesis or creative piece with accompanying analysis, followed by an oral defense before an examination panel.We recognize the challenges of juggling studies with work, family, and other responsibilities. That's why our Master of Philosophy program offers adaptable study options. You can opt for full-time or part-time enrollment when possible, enabling you to achieve your academic aspirations while maintaining your current obligations.

Qualification Requirements

For admission to a Master of Philosophy degree, you will need to have completed either (or equivalent to):

  • A Master degree by coursework (AQF level 9) with weighted average mark (WAM) of ‚â• 65, incorporating at least 0.5 years full time (or part time equivalent) of research training with a WAM of ‚â• 75*; or
  • A 4-year Bachelor (Honours) (AQF level 8) or Graduate Diploma (AQF level 8) (following a bachelor or honours degree) with an overall WAM of ‚â• 65, incorporating at least 0.5 years full time (or part time equivalent) of research training with a WAM of ‚â• 75*; or
  • A Graduate Certificate (Research Skills) (AQF level 8) with an overall WAM of ‚â• 75, with approved professional experience.

* The 0.5 EFTSL of research training must have included at least 50% of research on a focussed topic.

Additional requirements

You will need to demonstrate that your prior qualifications are in a discipline relevant to the proposed area of research – unless an exemption is approved by the Pro Vice Chancellor: Research Training (or delegate).

Please note that admission to a research degree at Adelaide University is conditional on the availability of a suitable supervisory panel and resources to support the proposed project.
