Tailored for graduates who have finished a Masters by coursework or an Honours Bachelor degree, our Master of Philosophy is entirely research-based and spans two years of full-time study. With mentorship from an experienced research supervisor, you'll design, plan, and execute your own independent research project on a topic that inspires you. The program offers the freedom to explore a subject aligned with your personal interests and professional field. This self-directed degree has no coursework or classes—instead, you'll meet progress milestones to stay on track toward completing your thesis or creative output. Your journey will culminate in producing a significant thesis or creative work with an accompanying exegesis, followed by an oral defense before an examination panel. Recognizing the challenges of balancing studies with work, family, and other obligations, we've built flexibility into the program. You can opt for full-time or part-time study, allowing you to advance your academic aspirations while maintaining your current responsibilities.
For admission to a Master of Philosophy degree, you will need to have completed either (or equivalent to):
You will need to demonstrate that your prior qualifications are in a discipline relevant to the proposed area of research – unless an exemption is approved by the Pro Vice Chancellor: Research Training (or delegate).
Please note that admission to a research degree at Adelaide University is conditional on the availability of a suitable supervisory panel and resources to support the proposed project.
