Tailored for graduates who have finished a coursework Master's or Honours Bachelor's degree, our Master of Philosophy program is entirely research-based and spans two years of full-time study. With mentorship from an expert research supervisor, you'll conceptualize, design, and execute your own independent research project on a subject you're deeply interested in. The program offers the freedom to explore topics that align with your personal interests and professional field. This self-guided degree has no mandatory classes or coursework. Instead, you'll meet periodic progress milestones to ensure steady advancement toward completing your thesis or creative output. Your academic journey will conclude with producing a significant thesis or creative piece with an accompanying exegesis, followed by an oral defense before an examination panel. Recognizing the challenges of juggling studies with work, family, and other obligations, we've built flexibility into our Master of Philosophy program. You can opt for full-time or part-time enrollment when possible, allowing you to achieve your academic aspirations while maintaining your current responsibilities.
For admission to a Master of Philosophy degree, you will need to have completed either (or equivalent to):
* The 0.5 EFTSL of research training must have included at least 50% of research on a focussed topic.
 
Additional requirements
You will need to demonstrate that your prior qualifications are in a discipline relevant to the proposed area of research – unless an exemption is approved by the Pro Vice Chancellor: Research Training (or delegate).
Please note that admission to a research degree at Adelaide University is conditional on the availability of a suitable supervisory panel and resources to support the proposed project.
