The Bachelor of Secondary Education (Honours) is a four-year teaching qualification designed to provide you with both practical abilities and academic understanding to succeed as a modern secondary school teacher.
Alongside hands-on training, you'll have the chance to specialize in two curriculum-aligned subject areas (Learning Areas) following the Australian Curriculum. Your chosen major and minor will qualify you to teach both subjects through Year 12.
This program prepares you to educate students in Years 7-12 within your selected subject specializations. The curriculum builds comprehensive knowledge through three key elements:
subject-specific instruction – courses covering the teaching content for your chosen major and minor disciplines
practical placements – classroom-based experiences to develop and refine your teaching skills in real secondary school environments
educational foundations – courses examining the broader role of teaching adolescent learners
Your studies conclude with a Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment, offering a chance to evaluate your professional growth and teaching methods. This self-reflection serves as a valuable tool for ongoing teaching development.
The program requires completion of professional placements in secondary schools. These full-time practical experiences occur at scheduled times throughout the year, coordinated by the University in collaboration with educational partners.
